XHTML 2.0 discontinuities?

Dave Winer:

Jeffrey Zeldman, a leading proponent of Web standards, shares Mark Pilgrim’s disbelief at the discontinuity in the W3C roadmap. “By design, the present XHTML 2.0 draft is not backward compatible with HTML 4 or XHTML 1.’‘

A lot of folks are in an uproar about this recently. I’m going to have to investigate, as this would affect a lot of people (including myself) who have put a lot of time into making their sites XHTML-compliant.
