The visual approach to virus propagation

I got this in my inbox this morning:

Microsoft Virus

Some things that come immediately to mind:

  • Virus writers are becoming pretty good at avoiding filters. I use spamprobe, and have trained it to be merciless when dealing with messages like this one. It must have thought that this was an actual Microsoft email.
  • They are starting to prey on our fear. Given the recent slew of articles in the media about infectation, a virus designed to look like a patch against virii is probably very effective.
  • Branding is meaningless when dealing with rogues. Did you notice that the author(s) of this email didn’t just copy the Microsoft logo off their site? They reproduced it, somewhat successfully.
  • We are visual creatures, and our eyes react much faster than our brains. I consider myself a savvy internet user, and I had to look twice at this email to make sure it wasn’t the real deal. Intellectually, I know that Microsoft would probably never send out something like this, but visually it looked pretty authentic.
  • Some virus authors have a well-developed sense of humor. Can you just picture the sneer when s/he wrote that closing line?
  • My parents are screwed. They’ll probably be infected if they receive it.

TechNewsWorld has an article on the Swen worm.
