Goodbye USA

I’m leaving the US tomorrow, for good. As many of you already know, I’m
moving back to my home country (Panama) after the end of my expatriate
experience with Cable & Wireless. I have some very interesting
things coming down the pipeline, which I will comment on here
when the time is right. In the meantime, posting to this site will be very light
due to the complicated logistics of the move.

To all the friends I’ve met during our tenure in the UK and the US:
thanks for making the past three years an unforgettable experience. I
hope to be able to repay your hospitality in the warm tropics.

Happy birthday Panama!

My country celebrates today 100 years of independence from Colombia. My friends and family are probably watching fireworks and having a grand ole time, while I’m stuck in Arlington, VA. (At least the weather’s been nice here!)

There’s a very good article in the Miami Herald today about Panama at 100, and the identity crisis that we currently face. A lot of the author’s points ring very true…

Side note: my great-great-grandfather was one of the people involved in achieving independence, and my name is sort of a family in-joke with his name.

Font Rendering in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther

I upgraded last night to Mac OS X 10.3, and as always with Apple products, the installation went without a hitch.

I had already read quite a bit about the many new features of Panther, but one that caught me by surprise and that may have been worth the price of admission by itself is the way the new OS renders fonts. Even carbonized apps look so much better under Panther than they did under Jaguar! The OS is also noticeably snappier than it’s predecessor. (I was expecting this from friends’ reports, but seeing speed up my TiBook is a different thing.)
