An experiment: The Washington Post paid Joshua Bell, one of the world’s best violinists, to busk outside DC’s L’Enfant Plaza Metro station. The result is an interesting study in the power of context. [washingtonpost.com]

There is a great response to the Joshua Bell article by a NYC subway musician in her blog: http://www.SawLady.com/blog
She interprets the situation differently from the Washington Post reporters… I thought you might find it interesting.
Hi Michelle, I agree that the Saw Lady presents an interesting take on the stunt.
It is still mostly about context though—the opposite scenario (having a busker onstage in Bell’s regular venues) would also probably be less effective than having each performer work within the venue he or she is used to.
