Prentice Hall experiments with Open Publication License

Steal This Book? A Publisher Is Making It Easy Prentice Hall is publishing a line of computer books under the Open Publication License which allows people to copy, modify and redistribute works. [via New York Times: Books, registration required]

Another interesting book published recently with an alternate license is Cory Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, a science fiction novel set in Walt Disney World. Mr. Doctorow has made the book’s content freely available for download. (I’m planning on getting the printed copy; a Powerbook is to large to curl up with.)

Lessig OSCON 2002 Keynote

There is an excellent lecture given by Lawrence Lessig at the 2002 O’Reilly Open Source Conference. Professor Lessig discusses the current state of copyright law and explains how our freedoms are being degraded by the entertainment industry, among others. Required listening if you care about your civil liberties.
