IA Summit 2006
In Vancouver for the IA Summit. It’s great be able to share a glass of wine with the great folks from around the world that make up this community.
Judging from the size of the room where David Weinberger is getting ready to deliver his keynote in, this is going to be a large Summit—expectations are high! (According to Dennis, attendance is 25% higher than last year’s Summit!)

Just in time for the IA Summit: ethnic restaurants in Vancouver.
Heading to Vancouver
The IA Summit is being held in Canada for the second year in a row. Canada is a beautiful country; I look forward to visiting Vancouver next month (my first time in this city).
Since Panamanians require a visa to enter Canada, and there is no Canadian consulate in Panama (the nearest one appears to be in Guatemala), I will be spending some days with my good Washington DC friends prior to heading up to Vancouver. Hopefully I’ll get the visa in time for the Summit. Worst case scenario: I get to hang out with good friends who I haven’t seen in a year.
Plane tickets have been bought, and hotel reservations have been made. I’ve renewed my ASIS&T membership (it had lapsed due to a credit card snafu) and registered for the Summit. If the stars are aligned (and the multiple flights are on time), I’ll get to hang out again this year with the brilliant folks that make up this amazing community. I’m excited!
Holiday lists
As a holiday treat, the Boxes and Arrows staff have published an article on some of the ways in which we use lists. Mine is about my mantra box, a tool I use to help me hone my intuition. Enjoy, and happy holidays to you and yours!
Microsoft betting the company on Internet services?
A couple of leaked memos from Bill Gates and Ray Ozzie suggest that Microsoft is starting to take the software-as-services model seriously. Quote: “We will build our strategies around Internet services and we will provide a broad set of service APIs and use them in all of our key applications.” Things are going to get very interesting in the web dev space.
Analysis of the memos from Jupiter Research. Cringely: “Welcome to 1996 as history repeats itself. What was happening at that time with Microsoft, Sun, and Netscape feels a lot like Microsoft, Sun, and Google today.”
